Let's celebrate together the 35th season of the Barachois Summer Music concert series!
An exceptionnal concert bringing together a fine roster of musicians from the east coast will be given, including art songs interpretred by soprano Chantal Dionne as well as chamber music compositions for violin, clarinet and piano.

Chantal Dionne - soprano
Chantal Dionne ravishes audiences with her unique charisma and velvet elegant voice. Upcoming Montreal performances include the Brahms Requiem with the Montreal Philharmonic Orchestra. Recent engagements include 4th servant in Opéra de Montréal’s production of ‘Elektra’ and countess in Mozart”s Nozze di Figaro at UDM Opera Atelier.
Prizewinner at the Montreal International Music Competition in 2005, the Canadian soprano distinguished herself in Italy the same year winning 1st prize, the public prize and the best foreign singer at the 56th Gian Battista Viotti International Competition.
Her first recording of Rachmaninoff and Liszt songs «Romances » with the pianist Louise-‐Andrée Baril has received international acclaim.
Whether in concert or recital, Ms. Dionne demonstrates her vocal abilities in repertoire ranging from songs to lieder and opera to oratorio. She has performed with many symphony orchestras such as Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitain Orchestra, Trois‐Rivières Symphony Orchestra, New Brunswick Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta del Nuevo Mundo (Mexico), Moscow Symphony Orchestra and Teatro Regio de Turin Orchestra.
Recent performances for the soprano include the Mozart’sRequiem in Saguenay and the Coronation Mass at the Triliarts Festival’s first edition in Ontario. She also sang the soprano solo from the oratorio Elijah by Mendelssohn with the UQAM chorus as well as the soprano solo in Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the Montreal Philharmonic Orchestra– the reviewer wrote
« From the Kyrie to the Agnus Dei, the canadian soprano demonstrated agility and remarkable vocal sensibility ». In Europe, she sang the soprano solo in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony for the Association Artistique des Concerts Colonne in Paris.
At the opera, Ms. Dionne has received much acclaim for her performances in roles such asMicaëla in Carmen by Bizet (France), as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte by Mozart (Vienna), of Véronique in Véronique by Messager (France), of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni by Mozart (Italy) and Marguerite in Faust by Gounod (U.S.). Closer to home, we heard the soprano in the title role of Adina in Donizetti’s Elisir d’amore at the Montreal Italian Week celebrations as well as the role of Françoise in the lyric version of André Gagnon’s Nelligan at the Opéra de Québec. The reviewer wrote about her performance «she plays her role to perfection, the voice is powerful and she brings a touch of emotion to this dramatic piece».
Mark Lee - violon

Halifax-born violinist Mark Lee studied at the Dalhousie University with Philippe Djokic. Following his graduation in 2010, he pursued his postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music with Lydia Mordkovitch and Maureen Smith as a Leverhulme Scholar. In addition to his teachers at the Royal Academy, he has also received private studies with Maxim Vengerov. Mr. Lee is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships that include the first Georg Tintner Scholarship Award, a solo debut with Symphony Nova Scotia in February 2010, the London Symphony Orchestra String Experience Scheme, Wolfe Wolfinsohn String Quartet Prize (both in 2011 and 2014), Max Pirani Piano Trio Prize, and the Regency Award recommended by RAM for notable achievement.
After receiving his Masters degree at the Royal Academy of Music with the highest distinction, Mr. Lee worked closely with the London Symphony Orchestra, and with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as acting Principal Violinist. He has made recordings with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and has toured extensively throughout Europe, Russia, and Asia. He has also performed for members of the British Royal Family in the House of Lords Parliament.
Mr. Lee is a member of the Verbier Music Festival Orchestra serving as concertmaster under many renowned conductors including Charles Dutoit, Yuri Temirkanov, Daniel Harding, Jaap van Zweden, Ivan Fischer, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Gianandrea Noseda, Valery Gergiev, Manfred Honeck, and Zubin Mehta.
As a chamber musician, Mr. Lee has performed extensively across Europe. His performances have been radio broadcasted live across the UK and Scandinavia. He has worked with several established chamber ensembles such as the BBC Scottish Ensemble, the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet, the Maggini Quartet, the Endellion Quartet, the Ying Quartet, and the Escher Quartet.

Dominic Desautels has been the principal clarinetist at Symphony Nova Scotia since 2012.
Regarded as one of Canada's prominent clarinetists, Dominic enjoys an active career in Canada and beyond. He made his debut as a soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 2004 at age 21, and has since been featured with several orchestras including the Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais, Orchestre de l’Université de Montréal, Orchestre de la Francophonie, Sinfonia Lanaudière and Symphony Nova Scotia.
He is a faculty member at Dalhousie University and guest artist at Scotia Festival of Music. Dominic is co-artistic director of the Montreal-based chamber ensemble The Parcival Project which has toured across Canada and South America and with whom he can be heard online on YouTube.
Dominic is the winner of the third prize at the 33rd International Stepping Stone Competition, becoming the only clarinetist to place in this prestigious competition since 1978, open to all Canadian instrumentalists and singers. Other awards include Radio-Canada’s Auditions Jeunes Artistes, the concerto competitions of the Université de Montréal and Orchestre de la Francophonie, and in the jazz world, his sextet The New Bridge won the Stingray Rising Star Award at the 2015 Halifax Jazz Festival.
Dominic had a late start on the clarinet at age 15 and studied with Jean-François Normand, Robert Riseling and Joaquin Valdepeñas, at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal, Western University and the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory, then earned a bachelor’s degree from the Université de Montréal in 2007. Upon graduation he became the principal clarinetist of the Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais in Brazil, a position he held until he moved back to Canada in 2012. Dominic also has served as acting principal clarinetist with ensembles such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Opera Company.
Recently named a Backun Artist, Dominic plays on the Backun MoBa clarinets made with cocobolo wood, and crafted in Canada.

Julien LeBlanc - piano
A virtuoso whose enthusiasm is genuinely contagious, New-Brunswick pianist Julien LeBlanc is renowned for his great musical sensibility and his talent as a communicator.
Fond of french music, his latest recording for the piano, « Mélancolies », including masterpieces of Franck, Poulenc and Dutilleux, received a rave reception from critics.
Julien is a well sought-after soloist, chamber player and accompanist.
Based in Montreal, he tours extensively the country allowing audiences from coast to coast to enjoy his performances with different formations as well as in solo recitals. He is also co-artistic director of a summer concert series “L’Été musical de l’Église historique de Barachois” in New-Brunswick, Canada.
In 2002, Julien was awarded the Prize for Emerging Artist of the Year by the New Brunswick Foundation for the Arts. Since his debut solo recital at the National Art Centre in 2003, he has been touring for Atlantic Debut and Jeunesses Musicales du Canada with violinist Marc Djokic all over Canada. His performances are frequently broadcasted on Espace Musique and CBC. The Canada Council for the Arts and ArtNB have supported him with several grants and scholarships.
Julien is a founding member of Trio Arkaède with whom he recently recorded a second album. A great lover of the art song repertoire, he is often heard on the concertv stage with many Canadian singers including sopranos Miriam Khalil and Nathalie Paulin. He was Pianist in Residence at UNB in Fredericton from 2005-2009.
Julien LeBlanc holds a post-graduate Diploma in Accompaniment from the Royal Academy of Music (London, UK) where he studied with pianist Malcolm Martineau, a Doctorate in piano performance from Université de Montréal under Paul Stewart and Marc Durand as well as an Artist Diploma from the Glenn Gould School (Toronto, ON).
